Naomi’s Essential Yoga Book List!

by Naomi Clark on August 27, 2017

A l’il while back a student asked me after a Hot Yoga Class “I want to read more about Yoga, where do I start?”

WAH! Big question – just like practice, everyone’s beginning varies and is so personal. Some methods, ideas and authors, just like people, grab ya immediately, and some a little more of a slow burn.I’ve had some books on my shelf for years untouched until one day  – Boom – I’m ready (namely, The Upanishads) yet I devoured the Bhagavad Gita at 15 after picking up a copy at Camden Market.

It’s worth finding a translation, especially of some of the ancient texts, that you find easier to read, for me personally, it if feels too heavy or high brow then I just won’t get it.

If you’re just starting out, give yourself the time to allow the teachings on paper to be experienced in real life – to become embodied. Svadhyaya  – study of the sacred scriptures and one’s self is one of the Niyamas, and just as important as the Asana a beginner might immediately recognise as ‘Yoga.’

So, here is my Essential Yoga Book List from my bookshelf.

Feel free to add to it in the comments as this was only my personal route in to learning about practice through reading, it is not a comprehensive guide…I’m always open to a new recommendation!
